About Me	WORK BIO James W. Bunn is a cause-related marketing consultant and broadcast communications professional with a wide array of skills and accomplishments. He’s been honored with a Peabody Award, six Emmys, and the Presidential Citation for Private-Sector Initiatives for his work creating a national public health education campaign. He is also the co-creator of World AIDS Day, an international disease prevention/awareness initiative, first conceived and executed during his tenure at the United Nations. In 2010 he co-founded The Matthew Freeman Project: Pens & Paper for Peace, in memory of the son of a high school classmate who was killed in combat in Afghanistan. Mr. Bunn spearheaded an effort among his classmates that raised money leading to the construction of nine libraries through the “Help the Afghan Children” not-for-profit. Following that Mr. Bunn volunteered his services as a documentary producer, then spearheaded the launch of The Freeman Project (www.freemanproject.org), a charity that collects school supplies from American school children, sends them to U.S. military personnel, who, in turn, distribute them to Afghan children. Within the first six months, over two tons of supplies were delivered – and to date, more than seven tons are on the ground in the hands of Afghan children. Bunn’s work as a broadcast journalist is extensive - covering wars for NBC News. He was among the first “embedded” journalists covering the invasion of Afghanistan with the 101st. Airborne, Third Brigade. Additionally, during a six week tour of duty in the Middle East, he spent a month on the West Bank covering the siege of Yasser Arafat’s compound. He also reported extensively on the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center (where he was first to report on the respiratory problems suffered by rescue workers). His long-form credits include Director/Writer for “Sportswives,” a two-hour show on A&E and Director and Writer of six episodes of “Art of The Athlete,” a one-hour series on Discovery Network’s FitTV. He was also Producer/Writer/Director for “Rocket Dogs” a one-hour documentary on Animal Planet. Bunn was honored with the Peabody Award and the presidential citation for his coverage of the AIDS epidemic and initiating “AIDS Lifeline,” a unique public-private disease prevention and awareness partnership that brought together the World Health Organization, MetLife, Westinghouse Broadcasting and the Harvard School of Public Health. Subsequently, at the request of the U.S. government, he spent two-years working overseas for the United Nations. There, serving as Public Information Officer for what is now known as UNAIDS, he was co-creator of World AIDS Day, now the longest running disease awareness and prevention program of its kind – over 20 years later. He was recently named an instructor at the University of North Carolina School of Mass Communications and Journalism where he was also invited to be a Hearst Visiting Lecturer speaking on the role of the media in public health. In 2002 Bunn joined “Keeping Kids Healthy,” a fledgling local program on WNET/Thirteen in New York City. Within 18 months of his arrival as Managing Editor and Senior Correspondent he spearheaded a successful syndication effort that ultimately cleared the show on over 250 PBS stations. He won four Emmys from 2005 - 2007 and in 2009 received his 18th such nomination. The “against-all-odds” storyline is a constant throughout Mr. Bunn’s professional life – a career spanning over 30 years. In the 1980’s, as a broadcast journalist for KPIX-TV, he began reporting on a little known story at the time – the AIDS epidemic. In addition to covering the story, he initiated “AIDS Lifeline”, a public awareness and health education campaign syndicated to television stations nationwide and was honored with a Peabody Award, and the first National Emmy ever awarded to a local television station.
