What is Edward Miguel (born 1974; class of 1992) known for?

Born in 1974, Edward "Ted" Andrew Miguel is a renowned American economist and a notable alumnus of Tenafly High School in Tenafly, New Jersey. After graduating as valedictorian of the class of 1992, he pursued his higher education at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained S.B. degrees in economics and mathematics. His academic journey continued at Harvard University, where, under the guidance of the influential economist Michael Kremer, he completed his PhD in economics in 2000, with a focus on the political economy of education and health in Kenya.

Currently, Miguel is a Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also the founder and faculty director of the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at UC Berkeley. His extensive research spans African economic development and includes the study of causes and consequences of violence, the impacts of ethnic divisions on local collective action, and the interplay between health, education, environment, and productivity for the underprivileged.

Miguel has done significant fieldwork in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and India, and his research is backed by various esteemed entities like the U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, USAID, and the World Bank. He has also made laudable contributions to improving transparency in social science research and has been instrumental in pioneering the use of rigorous evaluation methods, like randomized controlled trials, to assess the impact of various development interventions.

In recognition of his remarkable work, Miguel's joint research on school-based deworming in Kenya was cited when the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to his colleagues Michael Kremer, Esther Duflo, and Abhijit Banerjee for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.

In addition to his academic role, Miguel co-founded the Working Group in African Political Economy, designed to promote research related to African politics and economics, and has made considerable efforts to promote scientific evaluation of social and economic development programs in East Africa through the East Africa Social Science Translation (EASST) Collaborative.
