| About Me | Dr. A. Katrise Lee-Perera is a self-proclaimed life-long learner with nearly 28-years of service to learning communities. She is widely recognized as an innovative and visionary public education leaders for a progressively global learning environment. As she exhibited during her time as a LADY TOR - she continues to be recognized by her peers for hard work, for her scholarship, for her courageous leadership, for beating the odds and her uncanny ability to strategically lead schools/ districts to “WIN” on behalf of the students they serve. In 2015, the National Association of School Superintendent (NASS) named her the National Superintendent of the Year. Before being recruited and hired by the Gresham-Barlow School District (Oregon) in May of 2017, she served in school districts in both Virginia & Texas and as an executive leader with McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. More recently, in 2021 she was named superintendent in the Lancaster Independent School District and has lead the district to B+ academic TEA rating. As a LADY TOR – Dr. Lee-Perera – lettered in both softball (4Years) and basketball (3 years) where she was recognized in both sports. Coupled with recognition as an All-District softball player and after averaging almost 33-ppg; 11rebs; and 2 assist per game – it was on the basketball court where she excelled. Her honors included: • All-American Team-1986 USA Today high school girls basketball (1st SHS female athlete to be named an All-American) • 1st Team All-State team as a junior and senior • District 4-AAAA MVP as a senior • SHS 1986 Female Athlete of the Year (Dr. Sallye Toniette Award) as a senior • Team MVP as a senior • SHS 1986 U.S. Army Student-Athlete Award Recipient as a senior • Selected to play in the West in the annual Louisiana State All-Star game as a senior • Invited to tryout for the USA Junior National team As a result, she received several Division-I athletic scholarship offers, but - ultimately, accepted a full athletic scholarship to the NCAA #2 ranked women's basketball team at Northeast Louisiana University (NLU), which is now the University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM). At NLU, she played for four years but her playing days were marred by a chronic knee injury. That time did not go to waste, as she used it and her time as the graduate assistant to gained invaluable coaching, recruiting, planning, and leadership skills, which can be attributed to her career successes. After graduating from NLU in 1990, she and her college sweetheart, Rajiv, married and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. She was working in marketing and merchandising for the JC Penney, Co. before she had a change of heart to pursue a career in public education. As a result, she went on to earn 2-masters degrees and ultimately, a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership & Policy from Virginia Tech (a.k.a.-Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). Along the way, she served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal in Virginia. In 2010, she became a School Improvement Officer/Area Superintendent in Texas, returned to Virginia in 2011-2015 to serve as the superintendent for Isle of Wight County Schools, and now serves as the superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow School District in Oregon. Most importantly, Dr. Lee-Perera highlighted that her greatest accomplishments in life are … that she is the proud mother of twin girls, who are currently college students, and that she has been marr...(read more) |
