| About Me | Joined the Army in 1979 under delayed entry program at the same time Peter Schneider did (God bless him), right after graduation, in June, I shipped down to Fort Knox Kentucy for basic, then Fort Riley Kansas for first tour, and Boeblingen Germany, for final tour on a 3 year enlistment. Earned college money, and got out, joining the "Minnesota Army National Guard", Saint Cloud branch for four years. I Earned my certification in heavy equipment repair, played drums in "The Country Connection Band", One gig I do remember, at the "Side Bar" in Coldspring, during which time I visited with 1 classmate, "Mike Hansen", It was fantastic how we talked, outside in subzero temperature, and hit it quite well during my break. He was "amazed" of how well I held out to the cold, not flinching to it at all, while in a t-shirt at 12 midnight (I just got off the stage after playing "Wipe Out, and Pretty Woman", I was still warm). We agreed it was my "Army training" I said, yes we did train in Grafenver Germany tank gunnery's, and Camp Rilpley for winter operations training. I remember we never got along well in school. I delivered pizza for "Bellanti's", went to "guard meetings", worked janitorial, and worked "Ruan Mega Fleet". In 1985, I met Barb Mehr, a 1984 grad.of Paynesville High school. I Worked 7 days and nights for 3 years. It got very tough keeping that work tempo, soooo, in 1987, Barb and I married, and right after the wedding, In 1987, Re- enlisted back to the active duty Army. Committing to retire (not an easy endeavor), we had 2 fantastic kids in Fort Stewart, Georgia, Heather (24) and Brandon (21).I have hardship toured Japan; Korea; and Egypt alone. After Georgia, we transferred to Germany, During our tour, we vacationed Munich, Stuttgart and Wuerzburg, Salzburg Austria; Italy; London England; Paris Franch and The Black Forest. My deplyments included Doha, Kuwait, "Operation Southern Watch"; Dahran, Kuwait, "Operation Desert Storm"; and Baghdad Iraq, "Operation Iraqi Freedom". My family lived in Hinesville (Fort Stewart), Georgia for 12 years, while I hardship toured twice, "Camp Pelham", and "Camp Casey",Korea. Those tours, one year each. We transferred again to El Paso Fort Bliss. We retired in 2004, with 24 years service, and reside in west El Paso. Due to my exodus from the Saint Cloud community from 1987 to 2010, and "Much to my loss", I was unable to join everyone for our thirty year reunion. Sue Eickhoff (wonderfull classmate and friend), says there will be more. I sure hope so. Until then, I will visit as many of you on my own time as possible. The Army, and my Christian faith, have taught me, "we" are not getting any younger. W...(read more) |
