| About Me | It’s hard to believe a generation has passed since I left OHS behind. In truth, I left Eastern Washington, Othello, and nearly everyone and everything I had ever known behind. It’s confounding how it can feel like it all just happened yesterday and yet it simultaneously feels like a different existence. So, what has happened since then? In short, a life. I moved to King County and went to UW after OHS graduation. While attending UW, I worked full time selling and upgrading computers at Circuit City to pay my way through school. I stayed at UW entirely too long, with multiple majors, and trying to figure out what I actually wanted to do and be in life. Overall, I found the university experience to be nothing that I expected and rather underwhelming. As with many things in my life, I spent a lot of time ignoring the obvious path that was not only right in front of me but I was already walking it. It turned out my job to pay for college became my career. I have been working in Information Technology for over 25 years now. I started as a technician and worked my way up to an admin, engineer, senior engineer, design engineer, and then through layers of IT management. I specialized in security for financial organizations and spent years defending billions of dollars in transactions a day from Chinese army divisions and Russian hacking units. Also from the kid in his mom’s basement just seeing what he can do. It takes all kinds. In conjunction with security, I also designed and built multiple data centers and colocation data centers from inception to fruition. I’ve built innumerable computers (I stopped counting at 10,000), hundreds of servers, dozens of storage arrays, dozens of complete corporate networks, many complete phone systems including for four different call centers, and untold other “IT” things. It turns out people want their money instantly, anywhere, and at any time. But, really, that’s just school and work. It turns out that all matters very little in the long run. In fact, everything I have every done disappears in an instant as soon as the electrons stop flowing. It’s far from building the Parthenon in Athens or the pyramids at Giza. I often feel humanity isn’t what it used to be. Maybe that’s why one of my degrees is in history. Eminently fascinating and useless concurrently. I met my wife Amelia at work. At the time I was pretty sure that love and marriage and a family was not something in the offing for me. My life experience had made me believe these things would never come for me. However, life has a way of taking you in directions you didn’t anticipate or that you had completely ruled out. We got married when I was 30 and that was by far the best decision I’ve ever made in my life! We have spent the years since building a life together. My entire life changed for the better because of Amelia and Serena. What matters the most to me is my relationship with God, and my family and friends. The rest of life can have its momentary pleasures and del...(read more) |
