About Me	Paul Mathis was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He attended public schools. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, from Howard University, Washington, D.C., 1970, with a major in accounting and economics minor. He received his Juris Doctorate, as a Ford Foundation Fellow, from Vanderbilt University School of Law, 1974. While at Vanderbilt, he founded the Black American Law Student Association Chapter (BALSA). He served on the law school admissions committee, while a student, to foster diversity in the faculty and student enrollment. He is licensed to practice in Mississippi, Michigan and the U.S. Tax Court. He is a member of the Washington County Bar Association and Federal Bar. Mr. Mathis’s early experience includes serving as staff accountant for the Peat Marwick, Mitchell, CPA Firm, Chief Accountant for Tennessee State University; Special Accountant and Admin., to the State Treasurer, for the State of Tennessee. He served as a member on the Michigan Board of Licensing for Physician Assistants and related health care disciplines. Paul Mathis and his family moved to Greenville, 1991. Mr. Mathis’s 40 year career includes business law, housing law, school law, health care, defense, complex civil litigation, governmental, tax advice and counsel and entertainment law. In his diverse experience, he has represented General Motors Corporation, served as a GPSD Hearings Officer,Gen Counsel for The Spinners, several Home Health and Hospice Agencies, Local Physicians, and Pro Bono work to clear convictions and records for innocent men. He served on the Governor’s Tort Reform Committee, proposing legislation reform. He served as an Adjunct Professor, for Mississippi Valley State University, teaching, Business Ethics and other classes. He served two terms as Vice President for Public Affairs, on the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board for the Boys and Girls Club and is now serving his second term on the Greenville Arts Council Board. He has been active in the community, working with local business people and several community non-profits, having secured for them federal exempt status( among others, 100 Black Men , the United Federation of Negro Women of Mississippi and Delta Citizens Alliance). He is married to Dr. Elmertha Burton, an OBGYN. They have a daughter, Dr. Paula Major, Ed D., Assissant Professor at the University of Hawaii, West Oahu.
