| Favorite School Memory | I have fond memories of my homeroom teacher Charles Clark. I later became his pastor and had the privilege of ministering to him through his illness and death. |
| About Me | In 1964 I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Ball State Teacher's College and began teaching 4th grade at Meadowbrook Elementary School in New Haven, Indiana. I taught there for 4 years and simultaneously completed a Master of Arts in Education degree also from Ball State. I then trained as a Peace Corps volunteer for French West Africa but was convinced by my African language trainers that I ought to stay in the US and do something about the race problem in the US. I resigned from the Peace Corps and took an interim position teaching 4th grade at Thorncreek School in Whitley County while awaiting a teaching position in the inner city with Fort Wayne Community Schools. I taught at Harmar Elementary, a predominantly black school, during the Civil Rights Movement. While there I met and married David Knepple, a math teacher at Memorial Park Middle School. When it was proposed that Memorial Park become an experimental non-graded elementary school with all classes split 5th/6ths, I helped launch that program. When I became pregnant, I volunteered to move to Price Elementary for one semester before "retiring" to devote myself to my family. Dave and I became parents of two daughters, Melissa in 1973 and Sheri in 1974. We lived in Westlawn Addition at the intersection of I-69 and Illinois Road and were members of Forest Park United Methodist Church. While there, I became active in ministry to the Hearing Impaired and served as a sign language interpreter. When our daughters entered school, we transferred to Aldersgate United Methodist Church where, among other things, I assisted in the firwst Kids' Club in the area and helped resettle refugees from Laos. Upon recognizing a call to pastoral ministry, I began classes at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne and studied Greek at Fort Wayne Bible College. After a year, I transferred to United Theological Seminary (a United Methodist school) in Dayton, Ohio, driving back and forth for 4 years. I served South Whitley UMC as a Student Associate; Forest Park and Waynedale UMCs in Fort Wayne as Associate Pastor; Monroeville UMC, Stidham UMC in Lafayette as Senior Pastor; ands First UMC of Winchester as the first official Interim Pastor in the UMC in Indiana. Dave and I built a retirement home in Hidden Point west of Fort Wayne and returned to Fort Wayne in June of 2008. We returned to Forest Park where we coordinate the Food Pantry and assist the pastor and congregation in many ways. Always interested in learning something new, my husband and I assisted my brother in completely redesigning and rebuilding a...(read more) |
