| About Me | I was born seven days before Pearl Harbor was struck and went to a one room school through the eighth grade in Benton County , left home when I was sixteen, working for farmers for my room and board and $5.00 a week. I managed to buy a car and graduate from Milaca High School on my own in 1959 at seventeen. We didn't have anybody out running much in the 50's and 60's and I used to work the 3 to 11 shift at a Holiday station at 2286 University Avenue in St. Paul in the 60's and I used to run home from the bus in Minneapolis not knowing I was going to be a runner someday after I was in my fourties. A Minneapolis street cop blew his whistle at me thinking it was strange seeing someone running late at night with big work shoes on down at tenth & Hennepin Avenue and stopped me and asked me what I was running from. "You must be running from something" he said. I didn't do much running back then only because I felt like it at times or to get someplace in a hurry until 1982 when I was in my 40's and we lived in Princeton next to the high school track field. My sons and I would go out there and run on the high school running track. There I slowly got in shape when nobody was around. I used to run races most every weekend. Some years I ran well over 30 races in one year or as many as I could fit in. Nowadays in my 70's with gas and entry fees higher I only run to try to keep my weight down and stay healthy. A couple of races I drove all night to get to were "Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run" in International Falls , MN and "Queen Victoria Day 10 Mile Road Race" in Thunder Bay , Ontario . A few old favorite races I have ran was "Milaca PM Run" to Princeton , the "Mora Half Marathon", "Winter Carnival Frozen Half Marathon", and "Green Lake Road Race". Not to mention my most fun of all races was the two day relay race with eleven other great St Cloud River Runners on the "Ragnar Great River Relay Race" from La Crosse , Wisconsin to St Paul , Minnesota . My personal best is never the best — I just run to stay healthy. Now days in my seventies and not able to run as much you may find me walking or biking as I know if I still can’t run I had better just put as many miles in walking or biking. I don't always make it to the runs as much anymore as I need to give attention to my dogs and I love being there for my wife Lynn. It's been a real blessing for me to have met Lynn 1999 and to have married her in 2006. We both have grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and I believe running (walking/biking) will keep me around for them a lot longer. Thanks to our then Newsletter Editor in 1998 Gene Kalscheuer who I always used to meet at a lot of races for joining me up to the SCRR's and I enjoy being a SCRR even though I am a not running as much anymore. I never would of been able know all of you by name or use a computer if it wasn...(read more) |
