King commenced his basketball journey at Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma, further honing his skills at the University of Oklahoma from 1985 to 1989. He was chosen as the 6th overall pick in the 1st round of the 1989 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls, kick-starting his professional career.
