It isn't going to be easy but, it is going to be worth it We never touch someone so lightly that we don't leave a trace--unknown Be pretty if you can, witty if you must, and gracious if it kills you" -EK A pioneer in HIV/AIDS care, Ruth Coker Burks has provided home care for men and women stricken with the then fatal disease in Arkansas. Ms Burks served as Executive Director of HPWA (Helping People with AIDS) from 1990-1995. HPWA insures that people living with HIV/AIDS in Arkansas received the available services, treatment and emotional support. Ms Burks initiated innovative HIV/AIDS outreach and educational programs for churches, schools, medical and business groups...targeting those who are at highest risk. Ms Burks is a past consultant to the American Psychological Association and worked with the USIA (United States Information Agency) as a consulting expert on the effects and affects of HIV/AIDS on rural America. Ms Burks was also one of only 12 international delegates to the First White House Conference of HIV/AIDS. Ms Burks worked tirelessly with HERSA (Health Resources and Service Administration) on the Ryan White Comprehensive Care Act. Among Ruth Coker Burks’ numerous awards are the Arkansas Community Service Award from the Governor’s office and KARK-TV and the J C Penney Golden Rule Award for her volunteerism. Ms Burks has spoken extensively across the United States on HIV/AIDS issues. She resides in her beloved state of Arkansas with her family.
