About Me Local author signs new book in Exeter by G.E.S. It all started with a picture postcard. Writer Gary E. Sabbag and his girlfriend, Lolly, were not getting along at the time. Lolly’s sister, Lee Ann, mailed them a postcard showing a turtle and a duck sitting together on a rock in the middle of a pond. Lee Ann wrote on the postcard: “This depicts the two of you perfectly.” This gave Sabbag an idea. He proceeded to use the humorous, ironic, paradoxical and touching image to write a book, Myrtle and Chuck. The illustrated story of Myrtle and Chuck, written in rhythm and rhyme, relays the adventures of a turtle and duck. It's for children of all ages and time. Though one is fast, the other slow— diverse as day and night— Myrtle and Chuck's relationship will grow into friendship: nature's true might. All action happens at tropical Rock Pond, where friend and foe intersperse. Though we leave not this place, so fond, the story encompasses the whole universe. There's a legend, heroes, a villain or two, in this story of feather and friend. It expands a child's point of view, when they find the beginning at the end. The book signing will take place Thursday, June 28th at the Water Street Book Store (125 Water St.) in Exeter, NH at 4 p.m. Besides talking about and signing his book, Dover resident Sabbag plans to stage the reading of Myrtle and Chuck with some of his friends. “I call it a story for children of all ages because I believe those young at heart, and of mind, will fully appreciate Myrtle and Chuck,” said Sabbag. “The story has depth and universality. It can be interpreted on a number of levels.” Sabbag started and finished the book years ago. He is just now publishing the book because he feels the time is now. “The story has been read by teachers and me in schools in Florida, Arizona and Washington state,” Sabbag said. “Everyone seems to enjoy it, which is very gratifying.” Sabbag passed along a copy of Myrtle and Chuck to retired Maine teacher, Steve Jack. “I really enjoyed the book,” said Jack, who taught for 35-plus years in the Portland School District. “The literary techniques used, such as rhyming, similes, comparisons and alliterations may be considered high literature. I’d say the reading level for school children could be ‘advanced/gifted’ elementary or even junior high school level.” The story was printed by the University of New Hampshire press using 30% vegetable ink. “It’s the environmentally responsible thing to do, plus makes the book easy to digest,” joked Sabbag.
