| Favorite School Memory | I have several: being part of the Drama Club; taking part in the "Fake Assembly" my senior year; the friendships; having outstanding teachers like Mike Davidson, Cynthia Hakes and Anne Beyerlein; but most of all meeting my wife. |
| About Me | In January of 2018 I became managing editor of the Johnston County Sentinel, a new newspaper created following the death of the publisher of the Johnston County Capital-Democrat (where I had worked since July 1991). Career-wise I have earned over 220 journalism awards (as of June 2017) for my newspaper and radio work, and have written several books. See my author page at Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/John-Allen-Small/e/B003VVJDH6/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1) My journalism awards have come from the Oklahoma Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press, the National Newspaper Association, the Oklahoma Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; I served as project editor on a book entitled "The Men On The Sixth Floor," concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; have written a stage play and numerous short stories and poems; was a contributor to the 2005 science fiction anthology "Myths For The Modern Age: Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe," and the 2011 anthology "The Worlds Of Philip Jose Farmer: Of Dust And Souls"; and have published four collections of my own stories of my own - "Days Gone By" (2007), "Something In The Air" (2011), "If You Can't Take The Heat, Don't Tickle The Dragon" (2014), and "Stories Of Old" (2016) - as well as a volume of poetry, "Pastures Of Stardust" (2017), all available at Amazon.com. I've also had a number of articles and essays posted at various Internet sites. I have also been active in the community here where I live; I was our county's first-ever Americans With Disabilities Act coordinator; am a past president of our local Chamber of Commerce; served two terms as county Democratic Party chairman; was a founding member of our local literacy organization, serving eight years on its board of governors and one term as president; served on five-county "Truth in Sentencing" law enforcement organization; taught journalism seminars for our local Boy Scouts Merit Badge Fairs; served two years on our local hospital's board of control; was part of the team that established our county veterans' war memorial; helped organize a local "Friends of the Refuge" group to support the national wildlife refuge in our area; and served as chairman of a local economic development organization.
