About Me	Stephen J. Murphy was born in Dorchester and raised in Hyde Park with two sisters and a brother. Steve's mother is a retired Teachers Aid with the Boston Public School Department and his father is a retired Boston Police Officer and attorney. Stephen graduated from Boston Latin School and went on to attend Stonehill College receiving a degree in business administration. In order to pay for college, Stephen began to drive a van for Auto-Bus, Inc. transporting special needs students to schools. After graduating Steve was hired by Auto-Bus full-time as a personnel supervisor. Over five years Steve worked his way up to become general manager and ultimately vice president, overseeing all operations of the company. After Auto-Bus was sold, Stephen began a career in public service working for the State Senate as a budget analyst focusing on local aid. Over the next several years, he continued to gain an understanding of the public financing process. In 1997, Stephen was elected to office as an At-Large member of the Boston City Council. Since then he served on many of the Council's committees. Stephen Murphy has been chair of Boston's Ways & Means committee and has successfully shepherded the city's 2.4 billion dollar budget through the process, always balancing the needs of the residents with the fiscal restraint for the taxpayers needed to maintain Boston's AA+ bond rating. Steve's financial acumen has earned him high praise as an authority on public finance. He has been described as an excellent steward of the taxpayer's money.
